 What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that generally affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, heart, or the surrounding tissues. It is generally accepted that mesothelioma is only caused by asbestos fibers. The lungs and other internal organs are protected by a coating known as the mesothelium. Healthy mesothelial cells protect our lungs and other organs without incident. However, mesothelial cells that become cancerous become destructive. If you or a family member is diagnosed with mesothelioma, you will meet with your doctors to identify the type of mesothelioma and proper treatment. The most common types of mesothelioma include peritoneal, which affects the abdominal lining, pleural, which occurs in the lining of the lungs and pericardial, which affects the lining of the heart.

It takes several decades for mesothelioma to develop to the point where it is diagnosed. One of the most unfortunate aspects of mesothelioma is that it shows few symptoms as it develops. Some of the subtle symptoms one may experience are shortness of breath, loss of weight, and sporadic stomach pain or swelling. These symptoms generally develop as a fluid buildup occurs in the lungs or the stomach.

Asbestos Exposure

The hazards of being around asbestos have been known for many years for workers in certain trades, including shipbuilding, construction, automotive, and oil field. Workers in these trades occasionally come into contact with an insulating material that contains asbestos. If these materials release fibers into the atmosphere and they are breathed by the worker, mesothelioma can be a result. The worker’s family may also be exposed if the worker’s contaminated clothing is brought home and laundered. Although it is generally known that workers with heavier and longer exposure are at greater risk, studies have shown that mesothelioma can occur with relatively short exposures.
