Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a lung disease that results from the inhalation of asbestos particles, marked by severe fibrosis and a high risk of mesothelioma. Inhaling asbestos fibers for prolonged periods of time produces scar tissue within the lungs, resulting in respiratory complications. This is known as asbestosis.

The severity of asbestosis is dependent on the time period of exposure and the amount of asbestos fibers inhaled. Asbestosis can only be contracted through inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers.  Therefore, exposure to buildings containing asbestos insulation, which is not exposed to the air, does not increase the risk of developing asbestosis. Health regulations have reduced the likelihood of recent asbestos exposure to the point that the majority of individuals with asbestosis were exposed before the end of the 1970’s.

Asbestosis is generally an occupational disease. Automotive, shipbuilding, metal works and other industrial field workers have the highest risk of breathing in asbestos and contracting asbestosis or other asbestos-related illnesses. More common areas asbestos-containing products can be found in are:

  • Vinyl floor tiles/vinyl sheet flooring
  • Insulation systems for attics, walls, oil and gas equipment, coal furnaces, gaskets, and wood-burning stoves
  • Roofing and siding shingles
  • Heat-resistant and flame-retardant fabrics

If you have a history of exposure to asbestos or are experiencing increased shortness of breath, contact your doctor. Breathing may become more difficult over time, even after you are no longer exposed. In more severe cases, supplemental oxygen therapy is needed to assist breathing. Know the signs before it’s too late.
